Cursive Writing in Elementary Public-School Education

Cursive Writing in Elementary Public-School Education

The State Assembly passed a bill to include Cursive Writing in Elementary Public-School Education on February 20th 2024 and it now goes to the Senate.

 The Assembly Bill is AB937.

There is also a Senate Bill SB873 which is still sitting in committee.

If passed, the bill would require cursive writing to be incorporated into Wisconsin's model academic standards for English language arts. Model academic standards are a source for districts to use when implementing curriculum. This bill would also require all school boards, independent charter schools and private schools participating in a parental choice program to include cursive writing in the curriculum for elementary students. Students would need to be able to write legibly in cursive by the end of fifth grade.

In May of 2018 the GFWC-WI membership voted on the following resolution at our state convention:

RESOLVED, the General Federation of Women’s Clubs-Wisconsin supports the reinstatement of Cursive Handwriting instruction in the Wisconsin Department of Education public school curriculum.

There are 23 States that require Cursive Writing as of February 20th, 2024.

Please contact your Senators if you agree. I have included a sample letter used from our previous administration who worked so diligently on this endeavor to send to your Senators and a list of our current Senators from your districts.
